Unique Visual Project
I conceptualized a project that would create a unique sight for everyone in the world, every second, for the next 8000 years. It was an experiment to convey the uniqueness of everyone's life experience.
Meeting a diversity of people throughout life was the main inspiration for this project, so I asked 13 people from around the world to contribute. This included childhood friends, co-workers, my parents, girlfriends of the past and present, online friends I've never met in person, artists who inspire me, and various others. I asked each of them to create 10 images of anything they wanted with dimensions of 100 x 100 pixels. I assigned ten people to ten digits (0 - 9) and three people to three letters (A, B, C). The algorithm works by creating a 5 x 5 grid of selected images, adding up to 500 x 500 pixels and 25 places in the grid. Each place on the grid is assigned as follows: 1 - 4: The current year 5: The current month in hexadecimal format (1 - 9, then A, B, C for Oct, Nov, Dec) 6 - 7: The current date 9 - 10: The current hour of the day in 24-hour format 10 - 11: The current minute 12 - 13: The current second 14 - 25: The IP address of the computer visiting the website (12 digits)
Since each person contributing to the project is assigned to a digit or letter, one of their 10 images is randomly called in place of that digit or letter returned in the grid. This creates a gargantuan amount of permutations on top of the semi-unique string based on time and IP. Everyone on earth could log on every second for the next 8000 years (including the increasing population) and still not come close to exhausting all possibilities. Visitors will always see a unique sight composed on the grid and never see it again. This is a metaphor for everyone uniquely living each second and never having that moment again. I was never completely satisfied with the execution of this project. I think the concept is interesting but the results are not as dynamic as I imagined. Now that I have the general concept I plan on experimenting more with Flash or Processing. |
